Welcome to the June/July 2011 edition
of the Hadnall News.
It is a remarkable fact that in thirty years, there have only been 4
editors/editorial teams. The first issue of the magazine was
produced for October 1981. Before that a very professional
“broadsheet” was produced by the Hadnall Mission. I suspect there have
been six issues for every year since, which means that this is probably
issue no 178! I am grateful to Lia Cruickshank for giving me a copy of
the first two magazines produced. They make fascinating reading
and give a view of life in the village in the early eighties. I hope to
be able to find space to reprint parts so that others can share the
little windows into the life of the village at that time! It
shows what groups there were in the village and how often they
met. Some of these groups no longer exist which is sad – whist,
Brownies, Youth Club, Keep Fit etc. However, there is one group
to be congratulated (belatedly) as the Toddler celebrated its first
anniversary in 1981 so that means it has now been going 31 years. What
a lot of youngsters must have passed through their care!
With the change of regime, one helper has decided that it is a good
time to “hang up his boots”. People like him have been the means
by which villagers have actually got their magazines and have always
been the unsung heroes of the process. Norman Davey rang me up
recently and asked that he could be replaced as he was about to
celebrate his ninetieth birthday and felt it was time he stopped.
I asked him where he had been delivering and was amazed to hear that he
was doing the outer reaches of the village! We are therefore in
need of some people who would be willing to take over delivery of
magazines in the future. Anyone who is willing to do some
distributing should contact me. I would also welcome someone who
would be able to look after the finances, which I can say are in a
healthy state!
A special thanks to Editor(No.3) Sam Kennerley who took on the
challenge of taking over from Bill and Norman and who then moved to
Australia and continued to edit from there (with the help of Mum, Irene
Dabbs and others back here in Blighty)! In this edition, there is a
reference to a public meeting about the fenced off area in Church
Field. The Parish Council has taken over “ownership” of this plot
on behalf of the community. This comes about through a “Section
106 Agreement” which occurs when a developer agrees to make a community
contribution “in exchange” for doing the building. This one comes
about due to the second phase of the Chapel Road estate. A sum of
money also is paid to enable some development of the given area by the
council.
Initially, it was thought that a five-a-side pitch would be
constructed, but reservations about the cost of providing a suitable
fence to prevent balls going on to the A49, have made the Council
re-consider. Other ideas have been put forward from allotments to
a park with benches. Each has its merits and drawbacks, so the
Council has decided to call a public meeting to get the community view
of what to do. The meeting is the Monday after the Fete at 7.30pm
in the Village Hall. Everyone, of all ages will be most welcome.
If new Government legislation goes through, the Parish Council will get
more devolved powers from the County, particularly building
planning. It is now nearly 10 years since the last Village Plan
was produced and it is, therefore, time for an update. Shortly
there will be more details published and opportunities for villagers to
get involved with the planning and re-writing of this document.
The outcome will greatly help the Parish Council to be guided as to
what villagers want, for example, with the growth of the village (or
not).
There is a vacancy as mentioned elsewhere, for a new Parish Councillor
to join the present Council – please consider it!

HADNALL CHURCH
Doesn’t nature look wonderful at the moment? Everything is so fresh and
green and lush as we leave spring behind and look forward to the
summer. Our churchyard at the moment looks particularly smart thanks to
John and his team and it is a real credit to their hard work. Sometimes
even nature needs a helping hand to look her best.
By the time you read this our May coffee morning will have taken place
at the home of Andrew and Usha and we thank them for their hospitality
in hosting this meeting. Our June coffee morning will be held at
Beaconsfield caravan site by kind invitation of Alan and Lesley Walton.
This will be on Thursday June 16th at the usual time of 10:30am to
12:00 noon. We hope you can join us. Further details on location will
be given later.
It is a great pleasure to be able to have Christina once again playing
our organ at some of the services. It is good to be able to appreciate
the organ played with its full voice and enjoy the pleasing results of
its recent restoration. We would welcome anyone who would like to come
along and play it on a formal or informal basis, so if there is anyone
out there who would like to give it a try please do not hesitate to
contact the church warden on 210445.
On June 12th Hadnall is holding its village fete and the church is once
again organising the tombola stall. If you have any suitable items
please bring them to the village hall on Saturday 11th or pass them
onto a member of the PCC or Sylvia Wellings who has agreed to
co-ordinate the stall. Time to clear out those unwanted bits and pieces
and put them to good use.
A date for your diary is Sunday July 24th when the fundraisers will be
hosting a summer lunch in the village hall. The committee has been
plagued by illness of one sort or another over the last eighteen months
and has not been able to do as much as usual. We are hoping that this
time we will all be well and able to provide the usual first class
event. More details of this to come but we hope you can keep the date
free and join us in what is always a great community occasion.

PARISH COUNCIL NEWS
The AGM took place on 9 May. It was a busy meeting with much to do,
including saying farewell to Cllr Bryan Thomas on his resignation. As
Vice-chairman and the Parish Council’s representative on
his term of office. This vacancy is now being advertised.
Mrs. Caroline Oakes was co-opted and welcomed onto the Council to fill
the vacancy left on the earlier resignation of Mr. Llewellyn-Bell.
Following the business of the AGM, was the May meeting itself.
Councillors were updated with information about the continuing problems
of traffic speeding through the village and how this may be addressed.
Hadnall’s response last summer to the Site Allocations and Management
of Development (SAMDev) Plan has been confirmed to Shropshire Council,
following their request. During discussion, it was pointed out that
there was a need to revise our Parish Plan, which was drawn up in 2003
as part of the Vital Villages Project. This will take place as soon as
possible to reflect the views of the village’s changing population.
The fenced area of land adjoining the Churchyard has now passed into
the ownership of the Parish Council and plans can be made for its usage
by the village. There will be an Open Meeting to discuss the
Village Field and any ideas and suggestions you may have thought of.
Please bring your ideas along to the Village Hall on the evening of
Monday 13 June at 7.30 pm
Everybody is welcome. What would you like to see it used for? This is
your chance to shape its future!

The main thing attracting all the Committee’s energy is the forthcoming
fete. There are stalls to organise, raffle tickets to distribute,
posters to put up, leaflets to distribute and then we have to hope the
weather is kind!
Most houses in the village will have had a flyer posted through their
door advertising the attractions of the fete, but for those who live
outside the village, here is a list of the main things.
REFRESHMENTS BOTTLES
WHITE ELEPHANT CAKES
RAFFLES BARBEQUE
BOUNCY CASTLE FACE PAINTING
TOMBOLA COCONUT SHY
PLANTS ROLL-A-PENNY
BOOKS EXHIBITIONS
TOYS ICE-CREAM

The Sabrina Brass Band and MC Mike will entertain us during the

Mr Uppity and Mrs Giggles will entertain the small children.
There is a myriad of people to thank for their help before the fete,
during it and most importantly those kind souls who help the clear-up
process. Any volunteers are always most welcome!
Let’s hope we have a nice day and we get lots of visitors.
Thanks to Caroline Oakes who has agreed to act as Committee Secretary.

Bowling Club News – May 2011
So far 2011 has been a difficult time for the club. We’ve endured the
loss of several key members and have seen the membership numbers
decline significantly. Despite this we have managed to maintain our
presence in all the various leagues with the exception of the Sunday
doubles for which there was just not enough interest to sustain a
viable team.
On the positive side the club continues to thrive in other ways. The
green is still superbly kept, the surrounds look lovely and the support
from members is terrific. Tony, Colin and Ernie are doing a stalwart
job looking after the green, the work parties have been tremendous in
decorating the pavilion etc and our lovely ladies who clean the
pavilion and loos are still doing a wonderful job. In fact things just
seem to happen without having to do a lot of organising, which from a
committee point of view is an absolute joy. An example recently is the
roadside hedge ~ I remember walking past a couple of weeks ago thinking
‘that’s growing it’ll need cutting soon’! The next time I walked past
it had been done by Les & Ernie which is brilliant, we are so very
lucky ~ thank you all!
On the playing side Ernie stepped forward to fill the Captaincy void
left by Pete which was great of him. And what a start to his tenure –
after 6 games we are second in the Second Division which are heights
never before scaled. Well done Ernie and the team. Mike’s Friday side
is having a tougher time with a number of last years team not available
this time but nonetheless they have started extremely well and are
holding their own. The Whitchurch ‘B’ side under Gerry & Kaye is
also doing well even though they have so far only played a few games.
On the senior side we managed to sustain all our teams despite the
downturn in members which has left
the various Captains struggling to fill in for holiday absence or
illness. Fortunately we seem to be able to call on various stalwarts
who will never see the club let down and we are extremely grateful to
them.
On Saturday 7th May we held the first club competition of the season,
the Chairman’s Cup. This was well supported with 22 entries despite the
date clashing with Shrewsbury Town’s final game! It was an enthralling
contest throughout the afternoon and although it was raining at the
beginning the weather cleared up to give us a dry afternoon. After some
amazing games the final was played between Ernie & Darren. Darren
quickly went 6-0 up and it looked as if it would soon be all over, but
Ernie is a doughty competitor and soon pulled it back to all square,
for several ends it was nip and tuck until at
Bowling Club News (Cont.)
13-13 Ernie found his favourite mark to run out the deserved winner. It
was a super day and thanks to all who supported the event.
Dated for the calendar as follows:
Village Charity Shield 22nd June
1st Finals Day
16th July
2nd Finals Day
31st July
Jack Jackson Day
29th August
Presidents Day
19th September
Presentation Lunch 23rd October
Finally a plea for more villagers to get involved in the club. We have
a wonderful facility which we need to preserve for future generations.
It is cheap to join and the benefits are immense, fresh air, exercise,
company and the opportunity to meet a whole host of lovely people from
clubs all over Shropshire. You don’t have to be an expert – the
fundamentals are easy assimilated and coaching can be provided,
you don’t even need a set of bowls as the club have plenty all that’s
needed is a pair of flat shoes and the willingness to enjoy yourselves.
Speak to any committee member or the writer for more information.

Jil and family would like to thank all friends, and neighbours for
their support, kindness and lovely messages of sympathy during this
very distressingly sad time.
Thanks to all who attended the funeral and to everyone who contributed
towards the £757.72. for the Stroke Association and special
thanks to Dewi for acting as one of the bearers and to Rev Rob Haarhoff
for his lovely service, his kindness and support.
Hadnall Ramblers
Our final winter Sunday walk, on March 28th, was arranged by Shane and
Liz from Loppington, crossing the B4397 to the Old House, Mill Cottage,
Brownheath, Woodgate, through the fields to Bentley Farm. From
there we went to the Shayes and on to Nonely Hall and then towards
Commonwood Farm. Here we encountered a bull who fortunately had
no regard for us! We carried on, turning right into Salters Lane
and back to Loppington having climbed a grand total of 39 stiles!
After all that excitement, we retired to the Redcastle at Harmer Hill
for our well-earned meal.
April 5th was the first Tuesday evening walk and was lead by Anne,
starting at the Elephant and Castle at Shawbury. We went down
Church Road, Wythford Road, turning right onto a path through the old
brickworks to Shawbury Park. Crossing the A53 gingerly, we edged
a field and onto the old road and following paths through the woods, we
made our way back to Shawbury and our meal at the Elephant and Castle.
April 19th saw us being lead by Tony and Tom from the Dog in the Lane
to The Wheatley, New Coppice, Sundorne Farm and Summerton. From
here we followed the path back via The Wheatley and back to the Dog in
the Lane. That night our meal was in The Coracle in Sundorne Road.
On May 3rd, Shane and Liz took us on a good hike from the Horseshoe at
Uckington via Wroxeter, Eyton-on-Severn, Charlton Hill, past Donnington
House and back to the start. It was back to the Coracle after
that.
The most recent walk, lead by Jane and Anne led us from Frankwell
Carpark, up the Mount, turning right up steps to join the Severn
Way. We then followed the Severn Way path along the riverbank to
Shelton, through a housing estate and back along the Severn Way,
Mountfield Playing Fields and back to Frankwell. Yet again we ate
at the Coracle.
The next fortnightly walk is Tuesday 7th June at 6.00pm from the
Village Hall. All are welcome. If you would like to join us
for the meal, see our noticeboard in the village shop and sign up (by
the previous Saturday).

A note to our advertisers
The Hadnall News operates as a non-profit making service to the people
of Hadnall and district. It relies upon selling space to
advertisers and selling magazines to villagers. At present a
number of our advertisers have not paid their subscriptions due from
November last year. This means a proportion of the income due to
the Hadnall News has not been received and could in the future
put production and distribution in some jeopardy. Existing
adverts have been included on this occasion, but will not be for the
next magazine.
Advertising rates:-

Hadnall Women’s Club
We held our A.G.M. on March 21st. The Committee agreed to stand
another year and I was asked to stand as Chairman again which I am very
pleased to do. We were also very lucky to gain another committee
member, so a warm welcome to Kaye Weaver. As usual, after our
A.G.M we held a silent auction at which we raised £38.80.
We decided to keep our Annual Subscription to £10 but raised our
evening fees to £1.50, still cheap for a good night out.
On April 4th Sue Jassel and Abi arrived dressed in beautiful
saris. Sue showed us how to drape a length of material around our
bodies to produce a lovely sari. Sue explained the many ways of
obtaining these beautiful lengths of material, many hand sewn, and the
customs concerning the wearing of a sari. Some of the ladies had
great fun wearing one of the saris that Sue brought to show us.
Our next meeting was a DIY evening where all the members present made
several variations of chicks, rabbits, ladybirds, bumble bees and
painted colourful eggs which were then hung from a large silver painted
twig. This unusual but very bright and cheerful creation was
placed in a window of the Church for Easter Sunday. As you can
imagine, great fun and laughter was enjoyed by all the members!
We did not realise how lethal a glue gun could be – we had strands of
it all over the tables and ourselves.
By the time this is published we would have already had our May
meeting, which was a walk up Haughmond Hill with liquid refreshments at
some hostelry afterwards. Our June meeting on the 13th is a
guided walk around Whittington Castle. If you wish to join us,
please get in touch with me – you’ll be very welcome.

HADNALL PLAYGROUP
Firstly we were delighted with the result of our Ofsted Inspection, as
we achieved good. There are only 4 judgments that maybe awarded,
outstanding, good, satisfactory or inadequate, so this is a fantastic
achievement for us. It would be difficult for us to achieve
outstanding, due to the layout of the premises, as we do not have our
own designated outdoor area to provide free flow play.
We had our own Royal Wedding, where the children all dressed up and we
walked to the church where we had our 'Wedding'. The children also
painted a life size Will and Kate.
Thank you to everyone who sent in recipes for our cook book, this
should be ready in September.
If anyone still has any Tesco Vouchers, the last day for us to send
them in is the 21st June.
We have 9 children leaving to start school at the end of term, so our
numbers will be down a bit in September. We do have a few children
coming in, but still have vacancies. If you are interested in a place
for your child, you are welcome to come and have a look around.
On Wednesday 22nd June the Pre-school Committee are organizing a
wonderful evening of light, musical entertainment with local musician
and entertainer Derek Harrison. Doors open 7.30pm for 8pm start. You
are welcome to bring your own alcohol. Light refreshments will be
served afterwards and there will be a raffle. This is a fundraiser for
Hadnall Pre-school. Everyone is welcome. So come along for a lovely
summer's evening out and support us in the process. Tickets can be
bought from Hadnall Village Stores for £5 or from Sue Davies or

Hadnall Women’s Institute
Two more months, doesn’t the time go quickly! We try to vary our
meetings as much as possible. In April we invited Ruth Allen with her
black Labrador, Piper to come and explain Hearing Dogs for the Deaf.
Ruth is very deaf and relies a great deal on her dog. She told us
about first acquiring Piper and the training both for her and the dog
and that the estimated cost of a hearing dog through its lifetime is
£45,000. Piper wore a red jacket and was very quiet. When we had
our tea and biscuits and Ruth had taken off the jacket Piper became a
normal, lively dog with an eye for biscuits! That dog certainly knew
when it was working.
In complete contrast, in May after an early start, we spent the evening
in a poly-tunnel at Holly Farm Nurseries at Prees Heath After a talk
and demonstration on hanging baskets we were able to
choose plants and plant up our own baskets.
April is a planning time. We chose classes for our annual Produce Show
and details of the flower bed; it will soon be time to plant
that. At the June meeting we are learning about flies, the
fishing kind, and for members, don’t forget the plant exchange. Also
the Village Fete, we're manning the cake stall - all contributions
welcome.

Hadnall Parent and Toddlers
We have been very busy, with lots of activities for the children. We
had a visit from the Splodgers and the Splatters Road Show which is run
by the council, the children had a lovely time painting, gluing and
much more. We have made Mother’s day cards and the last session before
Easter the children all received an Easter egg and made Easter Cards.
As mentioned in the last addition of the Hadnall News, we were going to
raise money for a charity called CLIC Sargent, which supports children
with cancer. We managed to raise £44.70. Thank you to
everyone who supported us.
On the 26th April the children enjoyed a Red, White and Blue Morning,
to mark the Royal Wedding. The children all dressed up in Red, White
and Blue and they had a lovely tea party, with sandwiches and some
lovely Union Jack cakes made by Sue Davies and decorated by Jackie
Dickson.
We have also had a visit from Tina Porter, who is from the Family
Information Service.
We are going to open again on a Tuesday morning in the summer holidays.
Children under 5 can attend with older siblings up to the age of 12.
The cost will be £2.50 and £1 for additional children age 5
– 12. Tea, coffee and squash will be provided, but please can children
bring their own snacks. We have plenty of fun activities planned. The
dates include Tuesday 26th July – Tues 30th August.
New families are always welcome. The first week is free and then it is
just £2.50 per family. If you have children under 5, why not come
along and join in the fun. We are open Tuesday Morning 9.15am-11.30am.
Jane Bebb – Secretary
Hadnall C of E Primary School
First of all, thank you to everyone who came along to join us in our
recent events.
On 5th April we held The Big Cookathon event. Children, staff and
visitors cooked throughout the day under the expert guidance of Mrs.
Bebb and Mrs. Wynne. Thank you very much to both of them for
organising this successful event. Every child went home with their own
boxed portion of the giant shepherd’s pie which tasted absolutely
delicious. Thank you also to Tesco who helped out by providing us with
the ingredients for our cooking. A group of children, the Little Chefs,
are continuing to cook on a Thursday afternoon. I always look forward
to sampling their work!
Another enjoyable event was the Royal Wedding Garden Party which took
place on Thursday 28th April. This was organised by the enthusiastic
PTA. The sun shone brightly and lots of people came along to socialise
and enjoy the beautiful weather. It was lovely to see the garden being
used for this event. Children took part in designing hats and flags for
the celebration. There was a Birds of Prey display, stalls,
refreshments and a bouncy castle. We managed to raise funds which will
be used to support the children of our school.
Our assembly on Thursday 25th May will be held at St. Mary Magdalene
Church. The children are always eager to visit the church for the
monthly service, enjoying the experience of a special place for their
worship.
If you would like to be involved in our school in any capacity, and for
any amount of time that you could spare, please do not hesitate to
contact me. Our children and staff enjoy working with visitors and you
would be made very welcome. Our phone number is 01929 210323.

which will keep you up to date. www.hadnallcofeprimary.org.uk

Hadnall and District History Group
The group has enjoyed good attendance this season and we have been
pleased to welcome a few new faces to our ranks. We have no
membership fees so turning up to meetings is easy. Meetings are held on
the last Thursday of the month (except July, August and December) and
cost just £2.
Our next meeting will be about local pubs and hostelries so should
prove to be an entertaining evening of anecdotes! For the
following meeting, we are indebted to Peter Clark who will inform about
and entertain us with the history of the pianola. We hope the
weather is good as it will be a partly outside activity.
Our last meeting was a most lively and interesting talk about Much
Wenlock and the Olympian Games held there since the middle nineteenth
century. Helen Cromarty, secretary to the Wenlock Games Society,
amazed us with tales of what a determined and far-seeing gentleman Dr
William Penny Brookes was. In addition we were given the
opportunity to inspect one of the “Wenlock” mascots for the London 2012
Olympics.

would be most welcome and they can be sent to Tony or me or e-mailed to

WEDNESDAY CLUB
We were shocked to hear of the passing of Mrs Kath Davies who was a
regular attendant at meetings. Mrs Ruth Owen paid a moving
tribute to Kath and read a fitting poem entitled “High Flight” at the
meeting on 11th May.
Members and friends have been filling Smartie cartons with coins to
assist Age UK with their Diamond Appeal. Mrs Caroline Bowers
assisted in the making of chocolate Easter chicks. Quizzes and
bingo also contributed to some interesting meetings. An afternoon
of members’ choice of poems to read was enjoyed by all who took part.
The local Police will be speaking about “Security” at the end of May.
